“You are a ticking time bomb” - recovering from anorexia

December 6th, 2005

Kirsty, 21, from St Austell, Cornwall, England, says: “When you’re told that you might die, suddenly everything is put in perspective.” By age 18, her weight had dropped to as low as 70 pounds, at a height of 5′ 7″.

Kirsty had limited herself to 800 calories a day - and had “fasting” days where she ate just two cream crackers. By 18, Kirsty was down to five stone. Her face was gaunt, her head and hands seemed oversized and her hair became thin and brittle.

“They said to me, ‘You are a ticking time bomb’.” She promised to start eating again when she got out and as soon as she was home, she took the first, difficult step.

“As I took the food up to my mouth tears streamed down my face,” she recalls.

After successful treatment for anorexia, Kirsty has resumed a healthy eating pattern and has begun work as a clothes model after winning a local beauty pageant.

Note: One stone is 14 pounds.
